Company to spend $18.7 million to redevelop Bridgeton housing complex

South Jersey Times – A Massachusetts-based company will begin an $18.7 million to redevelop at an apartment complex in Bridgeton. The company bought the complex this year in March.

WinnCompanies, a property management company whose headquarters are in Boston, joined Senate President Stephen Sweeney, Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kelly, Bridgeton Council President Gladys Lugardo-Hemple and others to announce the first phase of a renovation project at the Bridgeton Villas, located at 205 Cottage Avenue.

The project, which is scheduled to start construction later this summer, will fix roofs on the complex, update mechanical systems, kitchens, bathrooms plumbing and other items at the property that was first constructed in 1966. The first phase of the project will focus renovation of 100 units.

“I am ecstatic because a national corporation has chosen to invest in our city,” said Kelly. “They have an excellent track record of redevelopment and managing properties when they manage properties. When they purchase properties and invest, they do not walk away and sell them. As they stand with us today, there are 300,000 people in their properties nationwide. I am happy to add these residents to the 300,000.”

Part of the project will also focus on providing units for homeless families as well as fixing some of the apartments to become ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant.

“It is exciting to see positive steps forward,” said Sweeney. “Bridgeton is the second poorest community in the state and getting millions of dollars in this community and that improves the quality of housing and life for its residents gives people a chance to take that next step. It is exciting because there will be more to come.”

The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2018.
