South Jersey Times — Dog owners now have a place to bring their pets to run and play as the Gloucester County-Logan Township Dog Park was officially opened Wednesday.

The idea for a dog park in the county has been around for more than eight years, according to State Senate President and former county Freeholder Director Stephen Sweeney.

“I want to thank the freeholders for following through on this,” he said before the ribbon was cut opening the park to county residents. “This is a commitment to the dog owners in this community. There really is a need and a demand for this in Gloucester County.”

The 2.5-acre park includes two fenced in sections — one for small dogs less than 25 pounds and one for larger dogs — as well as a water fountain, two gazebos, four dog waste stations and eight benches.

A cooperative project between the county and Logan Township, the dog park is located on green acres land and utilized donated fencing, recycled ground asphalt for the parking lot and benches built by students at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology. It’s total cost to the county was approximately $10,000.

“Logan Township had the land available and this is a perfect fit,” County Freeholder and Logan Township Administrator Lyman Barnes said.

Mark Pianin, a Woodbury resident, brought Stella, his three year old adopted chihuahua, to the park’s opening day to let her run around.

“I love it,” he said. “I don’t have a fenced in yard so it’s wonderful that on our day off we can come here and play.”

Pets are barred from the county’s other parks, so the new dog park provides a space that individuals can bring their furry friends to run.

Dogs must have current rabies shots and all other vaccinations required by the state. Dogs must wear a collar displaying a valid license to be at the park. A complete list of rules is posted at the park and at
