Senate President Stephen Sweeney
Deputy Speaker John Burzichelli
Assemblyman Adam Taliaferro

On August 24, Assemblyman Adam Taliaferro was honored with the Bobby Milward Most Courageous Award during the Washington Township Youth Football season opener, known as the Veterans Cup.

Since 2004, the Veterans Cup ceremony has paid tribute to U.S. military veterans, as well as other members of the community, for their service. The Bobby Milward Most Courageous Award is named in memory of Bobby Milward, an 11-year-old boy from Pitman who died in 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer.

“I am profoundly touched to be honored with the Bobby Milward Most Courageous Award,” said Assemblyman Adam Taliaferro. “Bobby Milward exemplified the kind of courage that has motivated me on my own personal journey. Bobby lived with such dignity, never complaining. He will forever be cherished in our hearts for his bravery in the face of such adversity.”

Assemblyman Taliaferro was paralyzed after suffering a spinal cord injury as a freshman on the Penn State University football team in 2000. Taliaferro, who defied doctors’ expectations, would walk again only four months after the injury, and has since credited advances in medical science for his recovery.

“I am humbled to be recognized here at the Veterans Cup,” added Assemblyman Taliaferro. “I am especially honored to stand among our military veterans who truly exemplify valor and heroism.”

Assemblyman Taliaferro was joined at the Veterans Cup by Fourth Legislative District Senator Fred Madden, Assemblyman Paul Moriarty, members of the Milward family, military veteran organizations including the Warriors’ Watch Riders, as well as players, coaches and volunteers with Washington Township Youth Football and their families.
